Some last minute pointers…

Whatever way you look at it, 65, 42, 35 or 21 Km is a long walk. You need to give yourself every chance of going the distance, so, on the day you should…

  • have an eski at base camp which holds cold drinks, sandwiches (consider high energy foods such as cheese & peanut butter) and snacks like trail bars and fruit, and a packet of jelly snakes.
  • Be prepared for all weather.  (current forecast is for windy, showery conditions with temps of 23 & very high UV rays)
  • Wear a hat & sunnies.
  • Have a multiple changes of clothing, especially socks.
  • Eat regularly – 65Km walkers will be burning something like 4000 calories during the day.
  • Drink regularly to avoid dehydration – if you feel thirsty it’s generally too late!
  • Walk at your own pace and keep to the left. Watch out for runners and cyclists.
  • Keep yourself entertained.  If you are walking alone for any length of time an mp3 player can help pass the kms. Smart phones can also be useful on the day to keep your friends and supporters updated via facebook or twitter.
  • Try and walk with other walkers and chat.
  • Enjoy the day as much as possible and be proud of your efforts.

The committee is looking forward to meeting as many of you as we can on Saturday.  Bring it on…

In a league of his own – Mark Cushway

One of our Walkers is 50, nothing unusual about that I hear you say.  Well in Mark Cushway’s case it is.  Mark has Cystic Fibrosis and on Saturday, Mark will take part in the 65Km Endurance event.

Mark has elequently spoken about his motivation for participating in the endurance event on his MyCause site which is linked here.

Be prepared…

There is always a great buzz on 65k 4 65 Roses day with community spirit to the fore.  However as a walker, you need to be as prepared as you can be and do all you can to get through.  Check out the the following page for helpful hints and tips on how to get through the day.

After the dust settles… records all round!

The dust has now well and truely settled on the 2011 65K 4 65 Roses Walkathon presented by Bright and Duggan, the leaders in Strata Management.

Hopefully, your aches, pains, blisters, bruises, and sprains have eased and the thoughts of ‘never again’ have diminished with the passing weeks.

Now is the time to reflect on what a fantastic result we achieved… records all round.

A record amount raised – $140,000+
A record number of 3am starters – 80
A record number of walkers completing the 65Km – 44

I think it’s fair to say that the day ran smoother than ever before, due in no small part to a very special supporting cast who worked tirelessly throughout the day.  These events don’t happen without you.  You know who you are, but others may not… so in no particular order, our fabulous volunteers were:  Sian Grech, Karen Long, John Furdi, Karen McKay, Chetan Pandit, Penny Field, Janelle Borg,  Sharon Simonds, Hayley Byun, Geshani Jayasuriya, Siobhan Brown,  Christie Graham, Andrea Kench, Steve Grima, Dominic Fitzgerald, Merilyn McArthur, Alison Elliott, Sue West, Diane More, Karene Gluckman, Madi Best + 3 friends, Ellie, Laura & Julia, Sally Shepherd, Alex Huntir.  Also thanks to Jamie Sorensen (after his 65Km), Paul Feltham, Bill Ali, Michael Gaffey, Ella Gaffey, Olive Taylor and Gillian O’Donovan for staying back to disassemble the base camp and return and store equipment.

A HUGE thank you to all the participants who took part and helped us to reach this great fundraising figure. The success of this event is dependent on everyday people doing their bit to help others. Whether you walked 65km or 7, we hope you got something out of the day.  The Committee is blessed that we get to work with a special group of people that make up the CF Community.

We would like to acknowledge some very special fundraising efforts:

Bright and Duggan – $18,043 – Fantastic support from Phil, Chris & Jen Duggan
Team Ruby – $14,430 – Danielle, Craig and co inspired us with their inventive fundraising efforts.
Team Finlease & Team Byrons – $12,618 & $8,180 respectively – both perrenial mainstays in the top fundraiser categories.
Andrew Stevens – $6,620 – delivering yet again.

A special mention also to the MLC Community Foundation who matched the fundraising of MLC Walkers to the tune of $8,000 bringing their contribution since the event began to $36,000

Also a reminder that now is a good time to reconnect with those people that promised they would sponsor you after the event!  The fundraising sites will remain open until May 8 for online donations.  If you have yet to bank any offline funds please deposit them directly into the 65k 4 65 Roses Bank Account:

  • Bank – Westpac
  • Account Name – 65k 4 65 Roses
  • Account Number – 517283
  • BSB – 032099

If a Tax Receipt is required send an email to 65K465roses@gmail.com and include the amount sponsored/donated, the donor/sponsors name, address and email

Finally a big thank you to all the organisations that support the 65K 4 65 Roses Walkathon. The success of this walk is largely dependent on the generosity of our corporate sponsors. Corporate sponsorship occurs not only in the form of financial donations but also in the form of ‘services in kind’, with everything from raffle prizes, fruit, drinks, meat, BBQ and other equipment being provided to us free of charge. We would like to encourage you support these organisations. A full list of which can be found on our sponsor pages – check them out.

Once again, many thanks for supporting our fight against Cystic Fibrosis.

Mark it in your diary
We hope we can count on you for the 5th edition of this wonderful event which has been provisionally set as Saturday March 3, 2012 .

Thanks and Well Done!!

Thank you to all who took part in, fundraised for, sponsored, or assisted with today’s 65K 4 65 Roses Walkathon presented by Bright & Duggan.

This year has been phenomenal!  Funds raised to date already exceed last years total, and we have yet to add in funds raised from our successful barbeque, from our casual walkers, and from our raffle ticket sales.

Thanks for everyone’s participation, and well done for helping us to make this a successful event once again, and for raising much needed funds for our Cystic Fibrosis charities.
