The Walk

65K465Roses is an annual endurance walking event to raise funds for sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis.

The aim is walk 65 kilometers (40.4 miles) in one day and raise as much sponsorship as you can for doing this.

The walk is round the Bay Run, a 7km circuit round Iron Cove in Sydney harbour.  The route passes through the districts of of Rozelle, Lilyfield, Haberfield, Five Dock, Rodd Point, Russell Lea and Drummoyne.  The Bay Run is popular with cyclists, runners and walkers, and has pleasant views over the cove.  The route is predominantly flat but there is one steep flight of stairs at the southern end of the Iron Cove bridge.

The Bay Run, the 65K465Roses route

You may have noticed that you will need to walk at least 9 laps of 7Km – this covers 63Km. We cover the extra 2km by walking out from the start point and returning at the very start of the walk to get it out of the way. From experience we know that walking those last 2Km at the end of the walk is no fun at all!

The 65k465Roses ‘base camp’ is set up in Leichhardt park. This is where you can register on the day, and where your laps will be recorded.  The base camp is a busy place on the day catering for the endurance walkers and entertaining passers by with

  • plenty of fresh fruit, snacks and drinks available donated by our sponsors
  • a barbeque and coffee
  • raffles and celebrity guests
  • There is a children’s play area nearby
  • St Johns will also be in attendance to help look after our endurance walkers
  • Toilets

65km is a long way and takes a long time to walk. A steady pace that assists with maintaining stamina over this long haul is around 1km every 10 minutes, or 6km an hour.  That means it will take 70mins to complete a lap.  That means around 11 hours walking time.  Add in breaks for food, toilet, changes of socks etc and you are looking at something like 13 hours start  to finish.

We start at 3am – and yes, that is very early indeed.  It does mean though that given the daylight hours during March we walk in darkness while we are still reasonably fresh.  When we finish the walk we are far from fresh and it is good to be able to finish while it is still light.

There is parking near the start opposite Le Montage Function Centre.
